Don Watson treks for mental health (and cancer).

Posted on: March 7th, 2015 by Greg Jordan No Comments

Hello reader,

Great to see attention being drawn to mental health (and in this case cancer) through the efforts of an Aussie Don Watson. Don walked/trekked from Fremantle in Western Australia to Sydney, a distance of over 5,000 kilometres! He raised around $28,000 for mental health and cancer programs. Well done Don, and thanks!

Is exercise good for our mental health?

Posted on: August 27th, 2014 by Greg Jordan No Comments

Yep! G’day reader. I hope all’s well with you.

Here is an article on the benefits of exercise on our mental health. I am a runner, and for me this is true. I always feel better after a run than i did before it. I know any form of exercise is often the last thing we feel like doing, but try to get out and get yourself moving at least a few times a week.

This is from Australia’s ABC Health and wellbeing site 26/8/14.

“We’re always being told to do more exercise because of the masses of evidence it wards off a host of nasty illnesses.

But if you’re someone who uses a good walk, run or gym workout to shake off stress or lift a low mood, there’s some science on your side too.

While there’s less known about the effect of exercise on your mind compared to your body, everything that is known suggests it’s beneficial and certainly unlikely to cause harm, says mental health expert Professor Tony Jorm.

“It’s one of those things that even though the evidence isn’t rock solid, there are other potential benefits and the risk of harm is so minimal, it’s a good thing to do,” says Jorm, one the authors of a recent position statement on exercise and mental health commissioned by Exercise and Sports Science Australia.

“Exercise is about as low risk as you can get and the side effects are about as minimal as you can get.”

And the benefits for physical health are so extensive, that even if it doesn’t help your mood or mental state, “it will potentially help a whole lot of other things”

Vale Robin Williams.

Posted on: August 12th, 2014 by Greg Jordan No Comments

Hi everyone,

Sad to read the news today that comedian and actor Robin Williams has passed away.

The following was posted on social media, and describes how i feel.

“He fought severe depressive episodes for decades and was open about it. I’ll bet his addictions were an attempt to numb the agony. He did manage to achieve a long period of sobriety but suffered a relapse not so long ago.

It may have been by his own hand, but it was depression that claimed his life.

I hope that his loss to the world will bring about a better understanding of the constellation of debilitating illnesses that are still frequently met with misunderstanding and stigma.

I hope that greater understanding and compassion will become part of his already brilliant legacy of joy”.

Vale Robin Williams. Thanks for your art.

Take it easy out there all. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for support if you need it.
