“Movember” 2015

Posted on: November 7th, 2015 by Greg Jordan No Comments

Greetings reader,

October has been a busy month with World mental health week, and some of the more responsible media outlets such as ABC T.V. in Oz airing mental health related info and discussion keeping the conversation flowing. Well done ABC, and to all the other media networks around the world who contributed positively.

November is also widely known as “Movember”. It’s an opportunity to focus on men’s health issues, such as depression and prostrate cancer, along with men’s mental and physical health generally. Grow a mo and support a bro. Link below for more info.

International overdose awareness day August 31.

Posted on: August 31st, 2015 by Greg Jordan No Comments

Greetings reader. Hope all’s well out there.

August 31st is International overdose awareness day. It is a time when we can remember loved ones lost to drug overdose. There are memorial services held in many locations across the globe, so there may be a service in your area that you’d like to attend, or reflect quietly on your own. My condolences to everyone out there who have lost someone to drug overdose.

Don Watson treks for mental health (and cancer).

Posted on: March 7th, 2015 by Greg Jordan No Comments

Hello reader,

Great to see attention being drawn to mental health (and in this case cancer) through the efforts of an Aussie Don Watson. Don walked/trekked from Fremantle in Western Australia to Sydney, a distance of over 5,000 kilometres! He raised around $28,000 for mental health and cancer programs. Well done Don, and thanks!

More band  interviews coming real soon. Take it easy out there.

Soundwave 2015 Australia.

Posted on: January 26th, 2015 by Greg Jordan No Comments

Greetings reader,

I hope all’s well. Looking forward to this years Soundwave festival coming to Australia next week in February.

I am hoping to catch up with some of the bands for a yap about what good mental health means for them. Aussie rockers King Parrot will be a highlight on stage, along with Slipknot, Slash, Nothing more, and just about the whole bill really.

Metal and hard rock music is a great healer in my opinion. It is positive, motivating and powerful. In my experience, through my travels, the metal community are among the most generous, respectful, non judgemental and decent folk you will ever meet, so get out to a gig near you and know you’ll be amongst friends.

Keep a look out for your fave band playing at a pub near you if you can’t get to Soundwave.

Take it easy and think positive. Speak soon.

Best wishes for 2015!

Greetings reader,

I’m back from a holiday break and looking forward to the new year ahead. I hope all is as well as can be out there, and folks survived the christmas/end of year season.

Some sad news late last year. We lost Stella Young unexpectedly at age 32. One of the many things i loved about Stella, is she worked to break down the stigma often present for anyone in a wheelchair.  Here is a bit about her and you can check out her TED talk at the bottom of this piece. I was a huge fan of her work on the T.V. series ‘No limits’. Vale Stella, and thank you.

Stella Young (24 February 1982 – 6 December 2014) was an Australian comedian, journalist and disability advocate.

Young served as the editor for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation‘s online magazine, Ramp Up.[8] Before joining the ABC, she had worked as an educator in public programs at Melbourne Museum, and hosted eight seasons of No Limits, a disability culture program on community television station Channel 31.[9]

Having previously appeared in several showcases and group shows, Stella made her festival debut as a solo performer at the 2014Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Her show Tales from the Crip, directed by Nelly Thomas, won her the award for best newcomer at the festival.[9]

Young did a TEDxSydney talk in April 2014, entitled “I’m not your inspiration, thank you very much”, in which she deconstructed society’s habit of turning disabled people into what she called “inspiration porn.”[6]

She was a member of the boards of the Ministerial Advisory Council for the Department of Victorian Communities, Victorian Disability Advisory Council, the Youth Disability Advocacy Service and Women with Disabilities Victoria.

Here is Stella in action:

Indeed folks, there are no limits! With a new year comes new energy we can tap into.

Take it easy out there and kick some arse in your own way.
